You can avoid getting struck by a train if you make sure you can hear or see it coming. Today’s trains are much quieter than they used to be, so don’t be distracted by cell phones or other devices when near a railway crossing. If walking or cycling, remove your headphones and put your phone in your pocket until you’ve finished crossing the tracks.
When approaching a railway crossing in a vehicle, slow down, look both ways and listen for trains. Turn off any music, ask passengers to be quiet and open your window to better hear approaching trains. If a train is approaching, or if railway warning signals are activated, immobilize your vehicle behind any gates or stop lines—or no closer than 5 metres (16 feet) from the nearest rail—and wait for the train to pass.
